Electricity is one of the basic expenses in any home. It is one of the unstable expenses as it gradually increases or decreases. It can be high during the summer or winter because of the usage of air conditioners or heaters. However, electricity usage is a controllable expense. Below are some tips to help you save on energy and money.
- Turn off the lights when the room is not in use.
- Turn off any appliances and electrical home decors when you leave the room or house. Examples are computers, AVRs, TV, air cons and indoor fountains.
- Unplug any unused appliances. This will also help you to prevent electrical shortages that can cause fires in your home. If you dislike the hassle of plugging and unplugging, you can opt for an outlet with a switch. - Make sure to close all the doors and windows when using an air conditioner or heater.
- Check how much electricity your lights, refrigerators, air conditioners and water heaters consume. If it causes you a lot, replace it with newer models that offer energy saving mechanisms. Initially, this may seem more costly, however this will soon reflect as savings on your monthly energy bill.
- Clean air-conditioning filters every month during summer. This is to make the system more efficient. As such, cooler temperatures can be achieved with lesser energy expenditures.
- To keep your house in the right temperature at all times, use a programmable thermostat. Programmable thermostat can help you lower your cooling and heating bills by at least 5-10%.
- Find alternatives on using electricity. For example, instead of using light during the daytime open the curtains to give way to natural light. Or if you want to decorate your garden with a fountain, why not choose a solar fountain instead of fountains that use electricity. Or you may want to make your candle light dinners more frequent.
