Recycling Ideas You Might Want To Try At Home

Home improvement projects do not have to be expensive. In fact, you can use some of your old stuff at home and turn them into something more useful. There is actually a lot of “garbage” at home that can be recycled. Here are some recycling ideas you should consider trying:

1. Use your washing machine’s drum as a vegetable strainer.

Got an old washing machine that is no longer working? Most washing machines have very durable drum or basket. They are usually made from stainless steel materials. You can detach the basket from the machine and use it as a vegetable strainer. It also works as makeshift clothing tub or can even be used for potted landscapes.

2. Use your old mattress foams and springs.

Mattresses do not easily decompose. They can stay on the surface of the earth for millions of years. So instead of dumping your old mattress in the junkyard, try recycling its parts first. Soak old mattress foams in a tub full of water and detergent to clean it. Let it dry under the sun. Once it has dried up, use the foams as filling for couch pillows or use it to create small ottomans. The springs can be used as plant markers in your garden. Put them right next to your outdoor fountains. Stretch the ends of the springs a bit to put a marker and then bury the other one in the ground.

3. Use old vinyl curtains to patch up holes.

If you have an air mattress at home that needs patching up, you can cut up a piece of the old vinyl shower curtain to cover up the hole. You can also use to seal leaks.

4. Use old pillows to make improvised stuffed toys.

If you have young children at home and they have a particular fondness for stuffed toys, you can create your own and give them as gifts. Use the cotton in your old pillows and the cloth from old clothes or curtains to make the toy.

5. Make plant pots out of bottles and cans.

This is a common way of recycling. If you love plants and you feel that clay pots are too heavy or expensive, why not turn your old bottles and tin cans into plant pots? It’s easy and it costs nothing but your effort.  You can even paint it with various colors to make it look appealing.
