Mold Prevention – How To Avoid Mold Growth At Home

Mold is a common health hazard that can be found at home. They like to grow in moist and damp areas at home. Although molds look harmless, there are actually certain types of molds that are poisonous. In addition to that, they can also trigger respiratory problems. You don’t want to expose your kids to them.

Here are some ideas on how to prevent molds growth at home:

  • Keep your home as dry as possible. Mop out excess moisture on the floor or the counter-top. When you spilled water or any form of liquid on upholstery, make sure you wipe it away immediately.
  • Have the moist areas in your home waterproofed. Cellars and basements tend to turn moldy. You can consult an expert on how to have these areas of your home waterproofed.
  • Use natural mold killers. Instead of using bleach or other harsh cleaning products, you can use bleach alternatives like vinegar and baking soda. The combination of these natural ingredients will definitely work in getting rid of molds. If your glass vases have molds underneath, try to soak them in a solution of water, vinegar and baking soda for a few minutes. It should turn the glass  vases clean and sparkly. Your coffee maker is also prone to molds formation. Try running an empty cycle. Put the solution of vinegar and baking soda in your water receptacle. For your washing machine, run an empty hot water cycle and add baking soda and vinegar to the drum to get rid of molds inside.
  • Use a dehumidifier. Since molds like to grow in humid areas, you can prevent their growth by using a dehumidifier. You can use dehumidifiers in bedrooms. If you have a baby, you can install it a foot away from you baby’s bed.
