Kitchen For Kids – DIY Kitchen Island For Kids

Teaching kids the value of nutritious foods and the joy of cooking at a very early age can be very challenging. You can’t have them romping around your kitchen, opening the gas range or the fridge and breaking dishes. You definitely don’t want them around any of your sharp kitchen knives.

One way to curtail the endless curiosity of kids in the kitchen without stomping on their creativity is to get them a nice DIY Kitchen Island. Creating a kitchen island out of an old, discarded square accent table can do wonders. Make sure you polish the edges of the accent table to get rid of scruffy areas. Paint it a new color. Black or grey should work well. Kids will play with this island so they will most likely get it dirty. It will be better to use a color that does not easily get dirty.

After painting it, try installing casters underneath. This will make the island easier to move around. You can place it in a corner of the kitchen while you are cooking so you can keep an eye on your little kid mimicking your every cooking move.

Get a rubber pad with a vibrant color. Cut it into four equal circles. This will serve as the cooking area of the island. Stick it on the surface of one side of the island. On the side of the counter, place four knobs.

Buy three hanger racks from the DIY store. Screw one of the hanger racks on the surface of the island to divide the space for the cooking area and the preparation area. The other two will be placed on either side of the island. You can use the sides to hang utensils, pots, pans or cooking gloves. If you have an accent table with open shelf underneath, turn this into a make-shift play over.
